Guest house turned into new office

This is a subtitle for your new post

It's hard to believe that a short two months ago this office was a little guest house for visitors.  We originally had turned this old garage into a guest house for my parents when they came to visit.  It was a nice little spot for a little privacy yet close enough to the house that they didn't miss out on the excitement:)  But since Dad passed away and Mom stays in Kynlees room now, we knew it would mostly sit empty.

We had recently launched out Proverbs31Girl merchandise and needed a spot to ship and store it all.  We decided that this little detached space would create the perfect office/shipping station.  And wow, only having it functional for the past month I have already seen how amazing it is to have a spot to create, think, and work!  We are so happy we transformed it!  The first thing we did after emptying out the guest house was to create a built in desk.  I had looked at a few desks and thought of potentially buying two desks but the cost was crazy and it just wasn't going to be as functional as I had hoped.  So I asked Ryan if he would build me a base out of 2x4's and then I would make it pretty:)  This is what he came up with. I wish I had gotten a better picture but I'll draw one of the design and sizes so you can refer to the drawing to see the full layout.

In total we used 10 - 10' 2x4's.  I tried to lay it out as best I could in the picture.  We kept the depth at 24" so the standard countertops would hang over 1".  Since we ended up covering the base of the desk with 1/4" plywood we added 2x4's on the ground as well to attach it to, so it was like we created a box frame on each leg.

We then picked up 2 pieces of 8' birch butcher block countertops from Menards.  This was the most expensive part, but also so very reasonable for a high end look for counters.  They are $229 a piece, but with the 11% back only $203 a piece.  You can find them HERE.

In order to make these birch counters look more like a beautiful white okay, I took some of my leftover Revere Pewter paint color and mixed it 50/50 with water.  This makes a thin stain like consistency.  I brush it on and wipe it off with a rag right after.  If you wanted it to be a warmer color you could use a light brown with no gray under tones.  Its such a great way to elevate cheap wood.  Once you wipe off the paint/stain mixture, I take my favorite special walnut stain by minwax and apply it on top.  It adds just the perfect warmth.

You can see the difference the stain makes in the picture above.  The left is the paint/stain mixture only, and the right has the stain on top.  See the extra layer of depth it brings?  Just perfect!

I also forgot to show you how I "dressed up" the 2x4 frame that Ryan made me.  I cut down 1/4" plywood into strips that were 2 1/2" wide.  I used them as vertical planking on the whole desk.  We first cut panels for the ends that covered the 2x4's and then used these strips to go over the panels.  I filled the holes with wood filler, sanded it down, and painted the base white.  I was so excited for the final result of this huge $500 custom desk me made!

ISNT SHE PRETTY!?!!! I knew that I wanted to make this little space feel a little official, and found a shop in town called Out Shaped that made me my logo out of metal.  We had the perfect spot for it.

I had so much fun decorating this space and adding all the pretty and functional details to make it usable and workable.  These are the desk accessories I got.

I also am in LOVE with the new desktop computer I got.  it's a touchscreen and an all in one so there is no need for a tower to be sitting out.  It's sleek and clean line and of course I used my favorite European gold rub n buff to dress up the stand and make it more "Allie".

I love the back detail on these chairs.  It's so pretty since you see the back of the chairs right when you walk in.

And in case you've ever been curious to paint a ceiling black, DO IT!  I love the drama it brings:) I couldn't find this exact light anymore but this one is very similar.

I can't wait to see the journey God brings us on and what will happen in this little space!
