Makeover Madness…Tate’s Room

allie • March 18, 2011

Again, there was no before picture for this room, but we painted the woodwork, the walls, added new lighting, and turned it into a little boys room.  When we moved Tate into a big boy bed I decided that I didn’t want bedding that had a theme to it.  I wanted Tate to be able to grow with it.  Since my bedding was a bit of a splurge from Pottery Barn, I wanted to be able to use it for a long time.  So, to keep it a little boys room for now, I added dinosaur sheets that I found on ebay and painted a big dinosaur on his wall, which if free:)  He loves it by the way!  I also added the table and chairs that my mother-in-law found at a garage sale for $2!!! For the set!!  What a steal, and sprayed the chairs red and painted the table white.  Tate and Kynlee both love to color in here.  I know some people think that I am crazy to actually keep crayons within a child’s reach, and Tate did color his dinosaur on the wall once, but it was a good teaching experience.  I want my kids to know boundaries and be able to have things within their reach and use them correctly.  So other than the 1 incident, it’s been great!  So, here’s the room…

We found this Pottery Barn bed on Craigslist (surprise!) for $120 including the mattress. If you are a germ freak you probably wouldn’t be that excited.. but for a mattress that has a plastic cover over it anyway for a boy who’s just been pottery trained, I was ecstatic! Also Norwex mattress cleaner helped put my mind at ease:) So the bed did need some work, but for that price I was willing to do it. I sanded it down and repainted it and ryan had to glue and re-nail one of the posts back on. When we were finished we had a $1,000 bed for $120:)

The activity center

The chair was from my room, but when we rearranged it no longer fit.  I picked up the red and white slipcover from IKEA for $5 when they were clearancing them out! Someday a bookshelf would look good by it:)

So, how much money was spent on this room?

The breakdown:

Bed and Mattress: $120

Bedding: $170

Table and Chairs: $2 + $3 in spray paint

Window Treatments made by my mom and I: $60

Dresser: $110

Chair: Repurposed

Accessories: $65

Total: $530

I’m excited that this is a room that will grow with Tate.  The dinosaurs can be easily changed to his next new fave and the rest of it will grow with him!

Happy Friday everyone!!

The Oaks final outdoor reveal

I pulled off the biggest surprise I've ever done... I can't believe it!! So a little back story - 17 years ago Ryan sold his prized possession, his 1991 Mazda Miata, to help fund a much needed mini van for our baby on the way. After I got pregnant I quit my job and we went from 2 incomes down to 1 income. We knew that a 2 person convertible just wasn't practical and that the finances could be used in a better way. So we sold it... Fast forward 17 years and it all comes back full circle. I put my 17 year old son Tate on the task of finding us a Miata that looked just like dads, and he blew it out of the water. He found the perfect car on Facebook Marketplace In great condition! He drove almost 3 hours to pick it up with a buddy and pulled off the best surprise ever!!! Also to note Tate has never driven through the Twin Cities or Driven a stick shift on any road besides a gravel one close to the cabin. BUT he was confident and crushed the challenge!! We stored it for the night and gave it to him the next day! I think Ryan's reaction says it all (watch the mini vlog below!) Our "19th" anniversary isn't until November but what fun is a convertible if you can't drive it in the summer, so we gave it to him early and are so happy we did! *make sure to read until the end for a good laugh ;)
