THE GREAT ROOM

WHERE WE RELAX TOGETHER AS A FAMILY

This room is where the family relaxation time happens. We all lean into the comfy couches lined with hundreds of down-insert pillows (that’s what Ryan would say) covered in creamy fabrics, start a fire and lounge with a good blanket. We have some more family room items in the great room section below, but we’ll get to that after we check out this room. In usual style, I want this room to be bright with lots of natural light, but also balance it with touches of black and earthy, natural finishes to make a welcoming space that feels grown up but not stuffy.

I’ve rearranged this room a bit because we had the same layout for quite a while and it was time for a refresh. It’s amazing how rethinking your room’s layout and editing the room can make such a huge impact on how you feel about your home. I highly recommend looking at your space and seeing what you can take away (and move to another room if you have the room) or enhance. Take a few items off a coffee table, the counter or a mantle. See if it give the space a fresh feeling. Edit your color palette for the room and see if you can simplify if you have too many colors and want a calmer feeling in the room. If you look around and it feels boring – can you add an accent color – like black or a natural wood tone to bring another layer to your room? Room refreshes, or restyling your space, are best on little to no budget because you work with what you have (for FREE!) and get the feeling of a freshly decorated space.

The Oaks final outdoor reveal

I pulled off the biggest surprise I've ever done... I can't believe it!! So a little back story - 17 years ago Ryan sold his prized possession, his 1991 Mazda Miata, to help fund a much needed mini van for our baby on the way. After I got pregnant I quit my job and we went from 2 incomes down to 1 income. We knew that a 2 person convertible just wasn't practical and that the finances could be used in a better way. So we sold it... Fast forward 17 years and it all comes back full circle. I put my 17 year old son Tate on the task of finding us a Miata that looked just like dads, and he blew it out of the water. He found the perfect car on Facebook Marketplace In great condition! He drove almost 3 hours to pick it up with a buddy and pulled off the best surprise ever!!! Also to note Tate has never driven through the Twin Cities or Driven a stick shift on any road besides a gravel one close to the cabin. BUT he was confident and crushed the challenge!! We stored it for the night and gave it to him the next day! I think Ryan's reaction says it all (watch the mini vlog below!) Our "19th" anniversary isn't until November but what fun is a convertible if you can't drive it in the summer, so we gave it to him early and are so happy we did! *make sure to read until the end for a good laugh ;)
