Living Life on a Budget!

allie • January 24, 2012

I know that I have talked about this before, but I am a stay at home mom.  My husband works hard for us but doesn’t make millions.  We went from 2 incomes to 1 with adding two kids to the mix.  We live by faith.  And God is so so good!!  I have so many stories, and I will share some of those with you later, but today I wanted to say that even if you don’t make millions, or drastically less:)  you can still live in a cute, in-style, fashionable home!  I have just a few pictures to show you to prove that, and how we created our home for way less.

LG Stainless Steel Refigerator–$2699 + tax

LG Stainless Steel Refrigerator, with a couple dents:)  $1000 (Tax Included!)

We bought this guy, as well as the rest of our appliances, on an online auction.  Some of them had dents, some were perfect, but overall we got our refrigerator, dishwasher, front loading washer and dryer all for $2000, still under the cost of a new fridge from your local Home Depot:)

Pottery Barn Chandelier–$199 plus shipping

Pottery Barn Lamp Shades, 3 for $29 + shipping.  Total for chandelier + Shades = $230 plus shipping

Ikea Chandelier–$40 plus 5 Shades from Lowes at $4/piece = $60

Not bad!  It’s not the same fixture but it gives you a very similar feel for a whole lot less!

Classic white Pottery Barn Dishes–4 Piece Place Setting, $142 + Shipping

8 Piece Place Setting including Large Plate, Bowl and Mugs from…wait for it…THE DOLLAR STORE!! $32

This one blew even me away:)  I was looking for something like this when we got married and couldn’t find it anywhere (at least in my price range)  so imagine my amazement when I run across them when I am doing some Christmas Decorating shopping at the Dollar Store!!  What a steal:)

and last one…for now:)

White Stoneware Bread Basket, William Sonoma–$49

White ceramic bowl, may be a little smaller, but the price was right!

Can’t beat that!

So, what am I trying to say through all of this?? That you don’t have to sacrifice the style and feeling of your home because of money.  You just need to keep your eyes open, get a little creative, and have patience to find the right buy!!

So here’s to Goodwilling, Dollar Storing, Spray Painting, Auction Finding Goodness!!  Can’t wait to hear about some of the deals you’ve found:)

Also, check back to see more budget friendly deals for your home later!

The Oaks final outdoor reveal
By Allie Lundeen August 14, 2025
I pulled off the biggest surprise I've ever done... I can't believe it!! So a little back story - 17 years ago Ryan sold his prized possession, his 1991 Mazda Miata, to help fund a much needed mini van for our baby on the way. After I got pregnant I quit my job and we went from 2 incomes down to 1 income. We knew that a 2 person convertible just wasn't practical and that the finances could be used in a better way. So we sold it... Fast forward 17 years and it all comes back full circle. I put my 17 year old son Tate on the task of finding us a Miata that looked just like dads, and he blew it out of the water. He found the perfect car on Facebook Marketplace In great condition! He drove almost 3 hours to pick it up with a buddy and pulled off the best surprise ever!!! Also to note Tate has never driven through the Twin Cities or Driven a stick shift on any road besides a gravel one close to the cabin. BUT he was confident and crushed the challenge!! We stored it for the night and gave it to him the next day! I think Ryan's reaction says it all (watch the mini vlog below!) Our "19th" anniversary isn't until November but what fun is a convertible if you can't drive it in the summer, so we gave it to him early and are so happy we did! *make sure to read until the end for a good laugh ;)
